Can neurofibromatosis cause eye problems?
Eye findings: The eyelids may become thicker and irregularly shaped because of the growth of a neurofibroma [See figure 2]. Children with this eyelid problem are at risk for developing high eye pressure (glaucoma) or lazy eye (amblyopia). Pigmented spots on the iris may increase in number over time.
Is an optic nerve glioma fatal?
Introduction: Adult malignant optic nerve gliomas are rare and rapidly fatal visual pathway tumours. They represent a clinical entity different from the more common childhood benign optic nerve gliomas, which are frequently associated with neurofibromatosis I.
How common is optic nerve glioma?
Optic nerve glioma accounts for five percent of all childhood brain tumors. Nearly 75 percent of optic nerve gliomas, which may affect one or both eyes, occur in children younger than ten years old.
Can optic nerve gliomas be cured?
Although optic nerve gliomas are serious tumors, they usually grow slowly, have a high cure rate, and rarely cause blindness. Most kids do well with treatment, and further vision loss usually is prevented.
How do you test for NF1?
- The first and most common method is a clinical diagnosis. Your child’s doctor will look for signs of NF1 in your child’s skin, eyes, bones or brain.
- The second method is genetic testing, also called a molecular or DNA diagnosis. Your child will need to give a blood sample.
Can NF1 cause glaucoma?
Glaucoma and associated globe enlargement have been described in a significant proportion of patients with NF1 and orbital–facial involvement. Optic nerve glioma may cause strabismus and proptosis, and palpebral neurofibroma may reach considerable size and occasionally show malignant transformation.
Can optic gliomas be removed?
Surgery and radiation therapy are two possible ways of treating optic nerve glioma. Your doctor can determine which type of treatment is best for you. Surgery is not always an option. Surgery may be performed if doctors believe they can use it to completely remove the tumor.
